Network Like a PRO

Networking can sound like a scary thing. It can be daunting being in a room full of employees and executives from various firms including the Big 4. However, frankly, networking is an essential part of accounting and business in general. This article will provide you various tips and tricks in your attempt to master the art of networking.

Preparing for a Networking Event

Preparing for a networking event involves numerous steps. It first begins by searching the career centerboard, or various Facebook pages and websites, such as the Telfer Accounting Club in order to find potential networking events that suit your interests. It is important to look into the firms that will be attending as well as the dress code in order to make the most of the event. On the day of the event, make sure to dress professionally. If it’s a business casual event, then usually dress pants, dress shirt, and a suit jacket works fine. However, if it’s more of a business formal event, then you would want to add in a tie.

What to Do At a Networking Event

In terms of networking, there are a variety of things that you would want to make sure of doing. Since networking events are normally only 1-2 hours, you won’t be able to have meaningful conversations with every single firm and representative; therefore, intentionally talk to the firms and employees that you are most interested in. When meeting these firms and representatives make sure to greet them with a confident handshake, introduce yourself and ask how they are enjoying their night so far. You want your conversation to have a good mixture of talk about work, such as what a typical day is like in their position, firm culture, their favorite thing about working there. However, at the same time, both you and the employee wants to build more of a personal connection as well, by discussing your interests outside of work, any cool hobbies or vacations they recently went on.

After the Networking Event

Networking simply does not finish after the event. You want to be able to deepen the relationships that you make with their representatives. A great way of doing this is by adding them on Linkedin and telling them how much you enjoyed talking about a distinct thing so you are memorable. If it seems appropriate, a great way to further connect is to invite them to chat over coffee. Networking has to be a continual thing if you want to see success. Therefore, you have to continue to go out to networking events. That way the employees will recognize you and your network will grow tremendously.

Apply these tips to before, during, and after your next networking event and see better results. Happy Networking!
